Lady Day and Coltrane

I made a very short video about legendary Jazz singer Billie Holliday to commemorate her passing more than five decades ago. The video is just a simple highlight.

Her real name was Eleonora Fagan Gough. But she changed in to Billie Holliday in tribute to a film celeb named Billie Dove.

She doesn't know how to read music and had no formal music training but she went on to sing for jazz big guns like Count Bassie, and Benny Goodman, and signed many deals with recording companies.

Considered as one of the highest paid performer during her time, Holliday passed away July 17, 1959 with just $750 to her name, according to NPR.

Eight years after that, also on July 17, the world lost another jazz great--John Coltrane. I'll do a short video about him next year. Meantime, please enjoy:

Nakaka blues naman... Para sa aming mga bata noon, simple lang ang buhay. Pag gising, may hilamos o wala, gagayak ka na sa panaderya. Bibili ka ng pandesal at mantekilya, kahit pupungas pungas pa. Bawal ang bumangon ng tirik na ang araw, at ang huling gigising ang siyang magliligpit ng banig, kumot at mga unan. Dahil sabado, pwede ka makinig ng radyo o manood ng TV. Pwede ka rin magpatugtog ng plaka. Isa si Olivia Newton John sa nagpaantig ng puso ko noon. Nalungkot ako una kong marinig yung I Honestly Love You. Isa yun sa maraming kanta na nirecord ko sa tape. Kasi noon, kung wala kang pambili ng songhits, ite-tape mo yung mga kanta, at pau-lit-ulit mong pakikinggan hanggang sa makabisa mo. Markado yung boses ni Olivia kaya naman nung lumabas yun Hopelessly Devoted at iba pang kanta sa Grease, laking pasalamat ko at nagka plaka kami nun pati nung Xanadu. May skating rink noon sa Luneta, swerte na napapasama ako sa mga ate ko noon. Tuwing tinutugtog iyun Xanadu, pakiramdam...

Magnolia Of My Childhood
